Gynaecology, like pediatrics, has been an integral part of Chinese medicine for a long time. Earliest known records of gynaecological treatments date back to the Shang dynasty (1600-1100 B.C.)
In western medicine the natural processes of menstruation, conception and pregnancy are generally described as a balance or imbalance, respectively, of hormones, enzymes and other biochemical substances.
In Chinese medicine these processes are considered as a choreography of Yin and Yang. The interactions of the two forces is changing over the course of a woman's lifetime. These changes, on the other hand, induce the first menstrual period at a young age, accompany the fertile years of a woman and are also responsible for the ebbing of the "Heavenly Water" during menopause.
